Backlight Panel

SOLO art

SOLO panels,
creations to inspire

As a passionate sculptor with a love for alabaster, ten years ago I began with a rough block of stone to invent and develop with my team numerous architectural alabaster creations renowned to this day throughout the world.
In order to further expand the possibilities of this fabulous translucent stone, I offer the Solo concept. The alabaster, along with its lighting element is presented as one unit with a slim profile, an optimized cost, and easier installation.
It is now possible to integrate alabaster in numerous new applications. .

The Solo is an all-inclusive panel combining the translucent alabaster plate, the LED light, and its frame; all in one thin element. Standard or custom size- it is easy to install and incorporate into all types of architectural and decorative patterns.

The SOLO Art, made out of a single piece of alabaster, is hung upon your wall much like a painting would be.
The translucent stone is uniformly back-lit to reveal the richness of its figures. A softness is created with this subtle light, creating an openness for contemplation.

The most unique alabaster plates by size and pattern are reserved for SOLO Art. Choose yours amongst a catalogue of unique pieces.

The SOLO Art can be hung directly as we supply it, so that the thickness of the alabaster is visible. It is ready to install with our system (only 5mm), which looks as if the panel is virtually touching the wall.
As with any light fixture, one needs to consider the electrical supply.
The low-voltage power supply can be concealed within a small alcove behind each SOLO panel, or placed anywhere else within 10m of the panel.

The SOLO Art can be hung individually, or composed in any number. The type of stone is then selected in accordance with each client.

The free-form SOLO Art is like a two dimensional sculpture – a tribute to its natural shape.

SOLO furnishings

The Solo furnishing panels are a great way for furniture makers and designers to create new furniture or revisit an existing design.

Some of the openings of this chrome and ebony bookcase have been fitted with Solo elements. The objects laid within them will be magnified by the soft light diffused by the SOLO.

The Solo elements have been integrated into the wooden headboard with harmony, bringing a soft ambiance- warm and cosy.

The SOLO floor combines specific techniques for ease of installation. A strong Stonelight treatment has been developed to withstand high traffic.

From inception to realization, the stages of a project.

From inception to realization, the stages of a project. Renovating a living room, the architect opted to create a new ambiance and fit the wall surrounding the fireplace with back-lit SOLO panels, embellished by decorative strips to add rhythm to the surface.
This wall becomes a light fixture, shining its soft light throughout the room. The dimming option will set the right tone for the ambiance of the room.

1 The plans

In conjunction with the architect and the crew of installers, the design team creates plans for the project with SOLO plates.
• Layout and size of SOLO elements
• Different types of alabaster
Electrical requirements: required wattage, location of electrical devices, dimmer type and location, wiring diagram.
According to the given dimensions, our team will compose the alabaster wall, and create a layout which will then be submitted to the client for validation.

2 Workshop production

When the plans have been approved, the SOLO are manufactored within 3-4 weeks.
Each element is labeled for a comprehensive installation per the layout and wiring diagram.

3 Preparation for shipping

The Solo elements are protected and placed into crates with the greatest care. (Note: Atelier Alain Ellouz has ten years of experience of shipping alabaster).
The crates also include mounting rails and electrical devicestransformer, dimmer, cables.

4 Installing mounting rails

Your carpenters will be installing the mounting rails. The exact position and spacing of the horizontal rails will be specified on the plans. They will mount the rails according to the structure of the wall, taking great care to stay on the same plane. They will set the transformers and other electrical devices in place, until the next stage.

5 Hanging the SOLO

The SOLO are equipped with mounting brackets on their back side. They are labeled according to the set of plans. The layout must be respected in keeping with the harmony of the composition.

Technical support and installing assistance

Our design team and technical staff are available if any questions arise during the installing process. A technician of Atelier Alain Ellouz can be made available onsite, per day, to assist the installing team as an option.

6  INSTALLATION of the filler and decor

In order to finish the 2cm action room between the solo panels and the ceiling, we can install a filler.
It can be applied flush with the wall, or recessed to create a groove. All that will remain is to set the decorations in place.

The benefits of the SOLO

 hanging system A5

With only 5mm thickness, this hanging system is essentially used with Solo Art.

 hanging system A10

For use by clipping within an opening.
Note: This clipping system is good for holding the alabaster in place, rather than supporting it entirely. The A10 clipping must be used alongside a base.

 hanging system A14

This system is suitable for combinations of Solo elements. It has a quick and easy installation, and allows for the spreading of weight of each element.
This system is composed of horizontal rails which mount to the wall, and vertical rails attached behind the Solo panels. It measures 14mm in thickness.

free-standing solo

The Solo can be designed to be laid or inserted into a piece of furniture without any support system. Likewise, it can be held along its periphery within a metal structure for a wall or a ceiling.

The finishing on the edges of the Solo allows for different integration techniques. Once the elements are attached to the wall (with A5 or A14), the wall can be finished so that the SOLO will appear to be hung, partially included, flush, or inset within the wall.

combining SOLO

For a surface greater than 1m2., it is possible to use multiple alabaster SOLO.
The layout of the Solo elements and the different alabaster plates are composed in conjunction with the interior architect according to aesthetic and technical choices.

Butted without decoration

The SOLO elements are laid side by side using the A14 system with a common rail, which ensures that the two elements are flush.

Butted with decoration

The SOLO elements are laid side by side and decorative elements can be applied on the surface, on the seams, or in a pattern of your choosing.
Those decorative elements can also be inlaid into the alabaster for a flush feel.

SOLO elements separated by a groove decoration

The SOLO plates are separated by a decorative strip of which the width and finish are decided upon based on the desired result. This layout adds a depth perspective to the project, since it partially reveals the thickness of the alabaster.

SOLO elements within a frame

This configuration of Solo elements both allows for a structural and decorative freedom, and makes corners very easy to realize.

Surface treatment for alabaster

Although the aesthetic qualities of alabaster are rich, its natural technical characteristics can pose a challenge. In order to protect the material over time, and still reveal its natural beauty, Atelier Alain Ellouz has developed specific techniques called Stonelight.

The constraints of alabaster

The richness of patterns within the alabaster is due to variation in density and crystallization. Amongst those are fragile veins where the alabaster plate may weaken.

The gypsum alabaster that we use has a hardness between 1.5 and 2, which is low (marble is 4-5, quartz is 7, and diamond 10), and prone to scratching.

Alabaster is sensitive to heat and shock. At 70°C its inner structure is altered, and the stone looses its transparency. Any impact on untreated alabaster leaves a dull white mark on the surface of the stone.

Untreated alabaster is porous, and penetrating liquids may stain.

Alabaster’s specific crystallization which gives it its transparency  is unstable under the sun. It will naturally darken and yellow under UV rays and exterior aggressions.

Stonelight solutions

Strengthening treatment

This technique encloses the alabaster within an invisible structure, thus adding resistance to flex.

protec ray choc

Shock and scratch protection

This treatment encapsulates the alabaster within one or more layers according to usage: a SOLO Art will recieve a lighter treatment than a SOLO Furnishing integrated into a bar top.

protec liquid

Sealing the surface

This treatment seals every pore of the surface, and permits resistance against different degrees of aggresivity.

protec UV

Anti UV treatment

This treatment is applied to those pieces which will be exposed to daylight.
The transparent qualities are then preserved.

Protection levels according to the use of the SOLO

The Stonelight level indicators is composed of three numbers, corresponding to three levels of alabaster protection for strengthening, shock resistance, and waterproofing. It is followed by the UV sign when the object will be exposed to UV light.
