The Art Capsules by Atelier Alain Ellouz offers a new journey inside the world of artistic exploration
Our Art Capsule project uses alabaster to give a new dimension to artistic beauty and sensitivity. With this innovative dynamic, an ancestral stone metamorphoses into a new artistic medium for artists. The project invites artists to fully harness the stone’s rich qualities throughout their entire process of creating original pieces. Over the past year, the workshop partnered with several creators from various artistic disciplines. The works of these potters, photographers, painters, video engineers, etc. were exhibited in our gallery in Bièvres, France.
Art Capsule – Natures Minérales by Caroline Leite
Art Capsule – Natures Minérales includes a limited series of alabaster lighting elements and slabs that Caroline Leite used to create a totally new artistic dimension with her own talent.
In this way, our iconic lighting designs such as Infinity 8, Luna, Sumatra and Bonnie became new mediums for Caroline. She gives them a new voice, turning them into original pieces of art.
Using techniques of dry point or black chalk, Caroline engraves directly onto the alabaster stone. Her delicate lines become a lasting part of the material. She depicts birds and flora in the style of antiquated engravings. But she lets herself be guided by the alabaster stone in a “respect for its own particular expression”, as she describes. For Caroline, cloud-like alabaster patterns evoke the sky, in which she imagines birds flying from the billows. Alain Ellouz spurs her to develop new techniques. Caroline begins by using a crayon to simply sketch directly onto the piece of alabaster. Then, following the stone’s patterns, her skilled hand engraves the material. With great detail, she creates striking tree trunks, delicate branches and Birds of Paradise. Her work incorporates the volume of the alabaster piece, creating a three-dimensional, sculptural work of art. Her precise lines follow the edges, they splinter, with no backward movement possible.
Caroline Leite, an archaeologist of contemporary art
As a visual artist, Caroline studied at the School of Fine Arts in Versailles. She is an illustrator, engraver, photographer and sculptor all at once. She pursues an artistic approach focused on the notion of time, heritage and remembrance. Her sculptures of concrete ruin, her photographs and her drawings of plant life and birds are like reminders of the past and of the fragility of balance. Each one of her pieces tells a story, almost like cave paintings.
Caroline describes her collaboration with Atelier Alain Ellouz as a remarkable composition comparable to sculpture. Alabaster’s vibrancy provides a slate on which she can write the story she wants to tell. And since discovering the stone, Caroline’s artistic direction has taken on a deeper purpose thanks to the material and its volumes.
