Chevauchées sur fragments d’albâtre: alabaster as a new artistic medium
Emerging from a desire to propel alabaster into the world of art, the collective exhibition Chevauchées sur fragments d’albâtre brings together four artists invited to fully capture the richness of alabaster. The exhibition will run until December 16, 2022.
Since last October 19th, visitors have been able to view Chevauchées sur fragments d’albâtre in the art gallery at the Alain Ellouz Foundation. On display at this event initiated by Alain Ellouz himself are extraordinary pieces born from a common motivation to explore alabaster as a new artistic medium through different disciplines.

Together with Alain Ellouz, who is back in the artistic saddle, three artists – photographer Christel Martin, potter Alistair Danhieux and digital artist Bernard Pourchet – present a selection of works inspired by their encounter with alabaster.
Each artist was able to discover this new material by creating pieces as a part of three series proposed by the Alain Ellouz Foundation. Punctuating the exhibition, the series include alabaster canvases, alabaster pixels and photographs from Christel Martin featuring the stone.
“A slab of alabaster is actually a geological photograph of a history that makes us who we are; it reveals, providing a medium of expression with infinite possibilities”
Christel Martin

As its curator, Christine Solaï worked alongside Alain Ellouz to develop the exhibition, a tour which showcases the vibrant power of alabaster. The stone offers creators a deep artistic medium full of history, one whose surface they can use to compose their own pieces according to their discipline and skill. Far from being a blank slate, alabaster is a material vibrant with life, compelling artists to search for ways to dialog with it.
This collective exhibition marks Alain Ellouz’ newest ambition to bring alabaster to the forefront of the international art scene.
